Barkston Ash Catholic Primary School

In EYFS we celebrate the child, unique and curious, ready for new experiences. Our aim is to care for our children and their families, to teach them and to learn from them and to enable children to achieve their full potential. We strive for high standards of care and education, aiming to know every child well and to personalise learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage team consists of experienced practitioners who each day are striving to develop their practice and be the best that they can be.

We follow the learning and development requirements of the EYFS (Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage published March 2021) and work to ensure a balanced curriculum, both in terms of areas of learning and in child and adult initiated activities.

Our curriculum is fluid and has several themes which we feel are important to allow children to understand the world around them. We value ideas, play and creations from our children and try to use these in our planning and teaching. We also believe that structured teaching is important and necessary. Children have daily access to high quality, stimulating indoor and outdoor learning environments enabling them to make choices about their learning and to access experiences in their preferred area.

Assessment and observation is at the heart of our practice in order to identify next steps of learning for each child and to ensure that children are motivated to learn, appropriately challenged and that activities are closely linked to their interests.
